INFLUENCE OF POLITICS ON OUR EDUCATIONAL STANDARD: A CASE STUDY OF OGUN STATE.

Politics refers to the activities associated with the governance of a country, state, community or an organisation in order to improve the status and standard of such entity. The above revealed that politics influences the status of a country or state either positively or negatively. The quality of political party in power determines the quality of leadership such country or state would experience.

Leadership is the ability to influence others. Thus, politics is a system that gives rise to leadership structure. Therefore, the quality of political platform in leadership determines the quality of leadership structure the people within such structure experience.

Education can be regarded as the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. This could be formal or informal. Education is thus a weapon to equip oneself for the future and task ahead.

Thus, if political structure influences the leadership of a state, then, it can be said that educational system of such state is under the influence of such political system. It should be noted that knowledge is power while education is light but subjecting education to a bad political influences can spell doom for a state.

In Ogun state, it is obvious that the political structure and party currently governing the state has placed little premium on quality education. The urge to take the educational standard of the state to an enviable height is definitely at a very low pace.

According to UNESCO, states are expected to allocate a minimum of 26% of her budget to education. This minimum percentage goes to states with well and standard educational structures and policies. The percentage given to education in our national and state budget in which the leadership of both belong to the same political party, indicates how badly the party has taken the issue of education.

This implies that the political party in power has not taken the plight and future of the young generations into consideration. With the embarrassing situation our nation has found itself in term of her decaying and declining educational standard, allocating a minimum of 30% to education at both levels won't be a bad idea. The quality of governance will surely translate into quality of education given to our children.

In Ogun state, allocation to education in 2016, 2017 and 2018 are 20.06%, 21.28% and 23% respectively. These have greatly reflected in the performance of our students at national and external examinations. The qualities of school libraries, laboratories, technical workshops, art studios, classrooms, computer rooms, music studios and others across our schools remains nothing to write home about. Also, the disappearance of competence, quality and standard from our technical schools across the state should call for a sober reflection on the future of our young generation.

This also brings to mind the number of qualified teachers across Ogun state and the quality of motivation given to these teachers from primary level. Lack of motivation of teachers is one of the reasons why standard has fallen across our schools. A situation in which teachers are forced to engage in other forms of trades so as to support and meet their financial obligation even at the periods they are to be in classroom is totally unacceptable. Teachers are also entitled to handsome welfare packages and rewards like those of other professions like law, medicine and others. When teachers are inspired, the inspiration will surely reflect on the quality of students.
To this end, it is obvious that the Universal Basic Education policy in Nigeria and indeed Ogun state will remain a mirage until people in government feels what other parents are feeling. Bringing to us free education is nothing when the quality that should follows had been withdrawn.

We need sincere leadership in the education sector as a way of spurring the sector to standard. All public office holders in the state have an obligation to enroll their children into our schools from primary level so that our children can share the same qualities of education irrespective of status. As a matter of fact, it takes a visionary political structure to be passionate about reengineering the educational system in Ogun state.

The policies of Young Progressive Party in Ogun state is one that is educational and knowledge based. YPP is ready to rescue the poor and declining educational standard in Ogun state through strong policies. Ogun state children deserve nothing but the best so as to compete with their peers across the globe. YPP is here in Ogun state to take the state back to an era where private schools become unpopular. The weapon of quality education is one that YPP is ready to employ is equipping and strengthening our children.

YPP in Ogun state has already prepared a well standard educational framework for our children with high professional touch in line with the needs and demands of the 21st century. Any educational policy that cannot equip the children with the required skills to make them an employer of labour in future is nothing but a waste of their precious time. YPP Ogun state has come as a rescue political platform to project our children to a standard that prepare them for the challenges of the new digital world. Never will children in Ogun state be drawn to the back anymore with YPP. It is only the Young Progressive Party that genuinely believes education shouldn't be a way to enslave the mind of our young generation but a way to liberate and expose them to global standard, given them the ability to explore their inner potential and ability.

A political party that didn't take the future generation first is a failed party. With YPP, the era of mental laziness by those in power and positions of authority is coming to an end. It is obvious that the influence of the present political party in government on our educational standard is negative. The children of Ogun state are no less citizen, hence YPP is here to place them in their rightful position as our future and leaders of tomorrow. With YPP, Ogun state children can be rest assured of a better and brighter tomorrow. YPP is here to give our children what the generations before us have failed to give us.

29th of May 2018 will continue to ring bell in the memory of children in Ogun state. It was a day YPP hosted Ogun state children at the party Secretariat in Abeokuta in celebrations of 2018 Children's Day and Democracy Day. What else could be given to our children than celebrating them. The organisers were able to take the children on historical lane of our democratic system. The life and time of the heroes of our democracy like Chief M.K.O. Abiola and others were exploited to the listening pleasure of the children. Many of the children won prices for their brilliant performance in games, debates and quiz that test their knowledge of history of our country and state. It was a day to remember as education was taken as fun. The day witness different educational programs in a fun field manner that the children hope the day could repeat itself. Children in the state were seen in a different mood of excitement and thus the important of the day was explored. No political party in Ogun state has ever celebrated the children in Ogun in this form. If a political party that is yet to be in power could be this thoughtful about the importance of our children in the state, then one can imagine what the party would do if eventually elected into power. YPP has dedicated itself to the service of our state in which the welfare of our children takes a leading priority.

It is high time Ogun state revitalise and rejigged her education sector with the view to repositioning her children to be at the forefront of global competitive advantage. No doubt having checked the policies and manifesto of other political parties in Ogun state, YPP has totally distinguished itself as the only platform that believes in the young generation and has pride itself as a platform where their vision and aspirations could be actualised. YPP believed in a knowledge based society with the children as priority. When the foundation of education is strong and standard, then the state can stand on a formidable structure. Our children are our human capital and the heritage of our dear state. Investing in our children is an investment into our collective future and one with unlimited dividend. The welfare of Ogun state children shall remain paramount and central in the policy implementation of YPP Ogun state thus, they are our future. YPP has taken it upon itself that no excuse shall be entertained for failure in the responsibility of the party to Ogun state children but rather prepared and ready to deliver their future to them as leaders of tomorrow.

YPP.................. Service to the people!
