Upgrading NIPOST

Image
REL Written by the Editorial board of The Guardian Newspaper With the emerging challenges facing postal services as a result of digital era technological developments, the plan by the Federal Government to upgrade the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) into a “mega-conglomerate” is worthwhile. That, indeed, may be the only way to ensure the survival of the organisation. Conventional postal service, today, is confronted by many new competition and threats from technological as well as lifestyle developments. With the growth in e-commerce that has made shopping online more convenient, even packages and parcels hitherto conveyed by post have become the forte of sundry courier services. Also digital services of mails, and other e-messaging channels on mobile phones or other devices have drastically reduced the number of letters sent through the post. So, the old style post office in Nigeria, as in any other country, faces a bleak future. The implication is that only a ...

PDP dares Buhari to probe the source of his own campaign funds

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the source of funds used for his political campaign in 2015. The national executive committee (NEC) of the party in its resolution on Tuesday described the probe of its members by the Buhari government as selective and an attempt to silence the opposition. It, therefore, urged the government to go after governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who have allegations of misuse of public funds “hanging on their necks”, and not just after members of the PDP. According to the six-point resolution released in a statement by Chinwe Nnorom, PDP head of publicity, the party condemned the “hounding” of its members by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and demanded their immediate release from detention. Below is a copy of the resolutions. The NEC was well attended and has the National Chairman, H.E. Sen. (Dr.) Ali Modu Sheriff, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, t...

Bible in One Year:  1 Chronicles 4:24-6:81, Proverbs 26:15-28 MESSAGE: One great difference between servant leaders and self-serving leaders is that servant leaders always look at leadership as an act of service, while self-serving leaders view leadership as a high status and spend most of their time trying to protect their status. CHECK OUT REASON WHY NIGERIANS ARE PAYING MORE FOR TOMATOES

Image
The Dangote Farms Tomato Processing Factory announced that it has halted operations in its $20 million tomato paste facility due to a scarcity of tomatoes, barely two months after beginning operations. This announcement comes as a surprise to many that believed Dangote was the reason for the tomatoes shortage plaguing Nigeria. The tomato plant was anticipated to help reduce wastage of the fruit in the country and to also minimise the amount of imported tomato pastes in the Nigerian market. According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Agriculture, Nigeria produces about 1.5 million tons of tomatoes a year, but over 900,000 tons is lost to rot. Nigerians have been severely affected by the scarcity of tomatoes, which is a key ingredient in most of the delicacies prepared in this part of the continent. The price of the fruit has increased by 400 percent; Nigerians now pay around 200 Naira for the same quantity of tomatoes which was sold at 50 Naira few months ago. But while...
