Babatunde Fashola gives conditions for stable power supply in Nigeria

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has stated the conditions that must be met for Nigerians to enjoy uninterrupted electricity supply. The minister, who spoke to journalists in Kaduna at the end of the second edition of the National Council on Power on Thursday, said unless hoodlums stopped vandalising gas pipelines, the epileptic power supply would persist. Stable electricity, according to him, will only be achievable when contractors execute power contracts properly. Fashola noted that host communities of electricity assets must also understand that they must make sacrifices so that the nation could benefit. This is just as the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, called for proper restructuring of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to ensure viable power supply in the country. Again Fire Guts Kano GSM Market, 44 Shops, Millions Of Naira Gone Down

Fire has razed down no fewer than 44 shops at the popular Farm Centre GSM market in Kano metropolis on Friday. An Eyewitness and one of the shop owners said the incident happened around 5.30pm when most of traders had closed for business. According to the witness, the fire which destroyed phones and other valuables worth millions of Naira, was said to have been caused by a spark from a converter supplying power to some of the shops. The source said though no life was lost, but no fewer than 44 shops were destroyed by the inferno. This is the second time the market was gutted by fire in the last eight months.

Federal High Court affirms Okezie Ikpeazu as Abia State Governor, dismisses the Tax Certificate forgery suit against him

Justice A.I Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Owerri, has affirmed the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State. Former governorship aspirant, Barr.  Friday  Nwosu also dragged Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to court over alleged forged tax certificates. However, the court ruled today that the plaintiff, (Nwosu) was unable to prove that the tax documents where forged and dismissed the matter. In a related development, an Abia State High Court in Osisioma granted a motion filed by Ikpeazu for extension of the order restraining the Chief Judge of Abia State, the President Abia State Customary Court of Appeal and any other judicial officer from swearing in Mr. Uche Ogah, as governor of the state. The order was extended to  18th July, 2016 .

11 Governors Dragged To ICC Over Unpaid Workers Salaries

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have filed a petition at the International Criminal Court (ICC) against eleven state governments in the country over their failure to pay salaries to their workers. The organization in the petition requested the Prosecutor, ICC, Mrs. Fatou Bensouda, to use her position to investigate allegations of collective punishment and crimes against humanity against tens of thousands of Nigerian workers as a result of non-payment of their salaries for several months by their state governments. The affected states are Bayelsa, Benue, Bauchi, Osun, Rivers, Oyo, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Ondo, and Plateau states. In the petition dated July 7, 2016 and signed by SERAP Executive Director, Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, the organisation expressed concern that non-payment of workers’ salaries by several state governments in the country has made life impossible to live for the workers and families.
