Eleven female traders returning from Adim market in Biase Local Government of Cross River State were crushed to death when a Mitsubishi truck ran into a Hiace passenger bus along the Calabar-Ikom highway allegedly due to lose of control of the vehicle by the driver due to brake failure.
Mrs josephine Asuquo , a health worker, who was at the scene of the accident on her way from Ugep to Calabar told newsmen that the mishap occurred between 1pm and 2pm Tuesday . She said the driver of the truck was trapped inside his truck while one woman was badly wounded.
The accident which closed down the expressway saw “residents of the community helping to evacuate the deceased.”
The Public Relations Officer of the Cross River Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Festus Ndumele, confirmed that the agency had men on the ground working with the police to evacuate bodies to the morgue and that they are now trying to unravel the cause of the crash.
