Rotimi Adebari – Short Profile
Rotimi is a Nigerian born Irish politician. He arrived in the Republic of Ireland in 2000. As
an independent candidate, he was elected into Portlaoise Town Council in 2004. He made
history in 2007 when his election as the Mayor of Portlaoise made him the first African to
be elected into such position in Ireland.
In the June 2009 Elections, Rotimi retained his Town Council seat and also secured a seat in
Laois County Council making him the first and only immigrant to be elected at that level
of representation in Ireland. He was a candidate at the 2011 General Elections into the Irish
National Parliament (Dail Eireann).
Rotimi’s obtained his first degree in Economics from the University of Benin, Nigeria and
Masters in Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University, Ireland. He has been a Guest
Lecturer in the same university since 2005 teaching managing workplace diversity module.
Rotimi is an Alumni of INSEAD (The Business School for the World) Fontainebleau,
France and Irish Institute at Boston College, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He lectured
intercultural communication in Champlain College, an American university off-shore
campus in Dublin.
Rotimi was a member of the Dublin City University team leading the European
Intercultural Workplace Project (2004-2007). The project consortium with its member
partners from Ireland, U.K., Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Finland, Italy, Norway, Poland
and Sweden produced reports and training materials to raise awareness and enhance
communication between different cultures at work in Europe.
Rotimi served as a jury member for European Programme for Integration and Migration in
Brussels. He was a guest speaker to share his thoughts and ideas on what he feels are
important for the future well-being of Irish society at the convention on Irish constitutional
amendment.
Rotimi, a policy development consultant, an intercultural trainer and a motivational public
speaker is the Chief Executive of Optimum Point Consultancy – an organisation that
specialises in cross-cultural dialogue, capacity building, leadership and workplace
diversity Training.
Rotimi pioneered volunteering initiative for National University of Ireland in Maynooth,
by promoting volunteering among students and matching them with areas of particular

interest. He was responsible for designing integration strategy for immigrants in Laois and
coordinated their integration into the wider community.
He was a Director on Portlaoise Educate Together National School Board of Management
and Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed.
Rotimi was a member of Community, Economic Development, Cultural, Heritage, Sport
and County Promotion Strategic Policy Committee of Laois County Council.
Rotimi served as a Director on the Boards of Laois and Offaly Education and Training
Board, Portlaoise Leisure Centre and Dunamaise Arts Centre.
In 2006, Rotimi launched an integration initiative called “Voices Across Cultures”. The
initiative uses the attributes of culture namely food, arts and music to promote cross-
cultural appreciation on yearly basis in Ireland.
In his effort to contribute to improvement of learning and research in Africa, Rotimi set up
Books for Africa Ireland, an Irish not for profit organisation. The organisation has donated
books to Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Nigeria and the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
In recognition of his contributions, Irish Minister for Justice and Equality in 2012 appointed
Rotimi A Peace Commissioner - An honorary role in Ireland with special powers to
primarily taking statutory declarations, witnessing signatures on documents requires by
various authorities, signing certificates and orders under various Acts of the Oireachtas.
A brand of Irish cream liqueur “Irish Mayor” was created for Rotimi Adebari to
commemorate his election as the first black, and African to be elected a Mayor in Ireland.
Rotimi has been the recipient of many awards, including: Social Entrepreneur Award, RTE
& Metro Eireann Media and Multicultural Award, Xclusive Magazine Person of the Year,
Bold and Beautiful Magazine Person of the Year, Worthy Ambassador and Global
Achievers Awards.
Rotimi is currently coordinating an ANED CODIFOR Project in Nigeria. The Project,
funded by French Development Agency (AFD) empowers electricity distribution
companies human resources managers to build capacity and performance.
Rotimi was born in Oke-Odan, Ogun State and he is married with children.
