As the federal government relaxed the ban on religious gatherings in the country, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has highlighted the conditions to be met by churches before reopening. The national religious body said it expects churches to start reopening in the first week of June after meeting the conditions. The guidelines were released by the president of CAN, Samson Ayokunle, The Cable reports. The cleric said the measures are put together to ensure the reopening of churches does not cause a spike in Covid-19 cases. Below are the suggested guidelines released by the religious leader: 1. Disinfection of church premises 2. Provision of alcohol-based sanitisers, soap and water for worshippers with supervision by medical professionals 3. Mandatory use of face masks 4. The Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Safety Commission has announced that the commission is set to begin the Register-to-Open initiative of the state government. This was disclosed by the Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, during a press conference on the government’s plan towards the gradual reopening of the economy. Mojola declared that in line with the directives of Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the guidelines towards reopening of the economy, especially religious and social centres have been developed and consultation is ongoing with all stakeholders in partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. He noted that upon registration, a verification process will be carried out to ensure adequate space management is put in place across the various centres to guarantee that social distancing, hygiene and safety measures are maintained across all religious and social centres. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike should the government fail to resolve issues revolving around the welfare and safety of its members. The NARD stated that the Federal Government is paying lip service to the welfare of health workers, especially when it concerns the review of hazard allowances and life insurance, which it says is active only on the pages of newspapers. While demanding for the reinstatement of 26 of its members who were ‘illegally’ sacked in Jos, the Association disclosed that some States government have chosen this critical and wrong time in the country to slash the salaries of health workers.

The Katsina State police command has arrested three men over a video they made and shared on social media, allegedly insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and the state governor, Aminu Masari. Spokesperson of the command, SP Isah Gambo, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, gave names of the three men as 70-year-old Lawal Abdullahi Izala; Bahajaje Abu,30 and Hamza Abubakar, 27, all of Gafai Quarters, in Katsina metropolis. Governor Abdullahi Sule, on Tuesday, announced in a press briefing that Nasarawa has recorded its first coronavirus case. He said that five tests were conducted, four came back negative with one positive. “It is sad to announce that Nasarawa has recorded the first case from this lady that travelled from Kano to Kokona local government area of the state. “We already evacuated the lady from Kokona to Lafia where we have better facilities to take care of her. “We have also isolated the family where she came from so that we can conduct a proper test to ensure that her family members are not infected, ” Sule stated.
